Industry and Academia must find ways of working ever closer together if the UK is to overcome the IT skills gap that threatens continued growth of the knowledge economy.
The Developing the Future Report, sponsored by City University London in conjunction with Microsoft, the British Computer Society and Intellect predicts that the UK’s knowledge economy will soon contribute around 50% of GDP. However, it also says that the growth of the knowledge economy and its dependence on IT has major implications for the way that computing is taught.
The author of the report, Dialogic Consulting CEO Michael Bowkis, commented, ‘the biggest risk to the knowledge economy is an IT skills shortage.’ He said, ‘Industry re-invents itself every 18 months in terms of computing Higher Education must follow suit if it is to produce the skilled graduates that industry continuously needs.’
